Dr. Catherine Posey received her Ph.D. in Curriculum & Instruction with an emphasis in Language, Culture, and Society from the Pennsylvania State University in 2011. Her doctoral research focused on children’s reading of two fantasy novels in spiritual terms, and her study explored both children’s oral discourse about their reading as well as their artistic discourse. Her central area of research continues to be children’s literature and spirituality, and she is particularly interested in how language arts curriculum for children and young adults can nurture the spirituality of the student.
She currently teaches language arts at the middle school level part-time for a creative private school in South Carolina, and she also teaches college composition, literature, and children’s literature at the college level, both live and online. Her other research interests include fantasy literature for children and young adults, particularly time travel fiction, international children’s literature, children’s literature and technology, and fairy tales.
Catherine has published various book chapters and journal articles related to the topic of children’s literature and spirituality, and has also presented her work at conferences in the U.S. and abroad. She is presently working on developing curriculum for middle school language arts classes that specifically aims to nurture the spirituality of the student in the classroom through literary texts. Additionally, she blogs about middle grade and young adult literature at www.bookish-illuminations.com.
Catherine is available for collaborative research opportunities and welcomes teaching opportunities related to language and literacy education and children’s and adolescent spirituality, both in the U.S. and abroad. You can reach her at teachingbeyondthebooks@gmail.com.
